With no legislative meetings on the calendar, this was a comparatively slow week, but nonetheless impactful.
Team Jarvis welcomes Harper LaFon as a summer intern. Harper is a rising senior at NC State, and we are excited to have her as she gains experience in state government and constituent communications.
I began the week by participing in the Davidson County Memorial Day Parade and spoke at a service honoring Gold Star Families, recognizing the sacrifices of fallen servicemembers and their loved ones.
My office staff met with interns from Student Action with Farmworkers to discuss proposed legislation and the North Carolina legislature. While I was unable to attend this meeting, I know my staff enjoyed speaking with the interns and providing an insight into how the state legislature operates.
I'm pleased to share that the Davie Rescue Squad will receive a $25,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to strengthen emergency preparedness in advance of the upcoming hurricane season.
I would also like to recognize another stellar student from our district this week, Cayleigh Shaw. Cayleigh has earned a competitive internship with the N.C. State Extension Summer Program, and I am proud to shine a light on her accomplishments.
My condolences remain with the Lexington community in the wake of the Main Street fire last week. I join our community in grieving the devastation, and my office is here to provide support and assistance to our community at this time.
Finally, in recognition of National Foster Care Month, I want to emphasize the importance of supporting foster youth and families. I remained dedicated to strengthening the foster care system through my position and supporting the families of District 30 and North Carolina.
Even during slow weeks, I recognize the honor it is to serve as a State Senator, and I remain dedicated to serving the state of North Carolina.
Thank you for allowing me to serve you.

I'm happy to share that Team Jarvis has gained a new member for the next few months - Harper LaFon.
Harper will be joining the office through August as a Summer Intern. She will spend the next few months learning about state government, the policy process, constituent communications, and assisting in running our office.
Harper is a current undergrad student studying Political Science and Legal History with a minor in Philosophy. She brings customer service experience and an excitement to learn and serve her community to this role. She is currently studying to take the LSAT and plans to attend law school after graduation.
We are excited to have Harper on staff this summer and invite you to join us in welcoming her to Team Jarvis.
Memorial Day Parade
I began the week by attending the Davidson County Memorial Day Parade. This annual event provides our community a chance to come together and honor the servicemen and women who have sacrificed everything for our country. We honor their families as we recognize their grief and the holes left by their loved ones. We also come together as a community to celebrate our country and the heroes that defend it.
As the elected official of District 30, I honor each servicemember who has given their life in service of our country, and I express my deepest condolences to the loved ones left behind.
Gold Star Families
This Memorial Day I was honored to be asked to speak at a service for our community's Gold Star Families.
Gold Star Families are the immediate family members of servicemembers killed in the line of duty. I am grateful for the servicemembers of our community that have sacrificed their lives for our country.
I consider it an honor to be asked to speak at this event honoring our fallen heroes and their families. You are valued members of our community, and I am here to serve you. My office is available and ready to assist you however we are able. Please never hesitate to reach out.
Future Changemakers
On Wednesday, our office was visited by a group of interns with Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF). While I was serving in-district on Wednesday, the group was able to meet with our staff - my legislative assistant, Caitlin, and our intern, Harper.
Caitlin and Harper enjoyed a conversation with SAF about current legislation affecting local farmers and how legislation impacts rural communities. They were also able to share information about the NC legislature, what working for an elected official involves, and the different paths students can take to work in government.
Even when I am not present, our office is always ready to engage with constituents. I am glad we were able to accommodate a meeting with SAF and hope they left more prepared to continue engaging with elected officials, government staff, and making a meaningful impact in their careers.
Davie Rescue Squad Receives Grant
I'm excited to share that the Davie Rescue Squad has been selected as a recipient of a grant through the Duke Energy Foundation to bolster emergency preparedness ahead of hurricane season. The Duke Energy Foundation graciously awarded $500,000 in funds across North Carolina in an effort to strengthen storm preparedness.
The Davie Rescue Squad will receive $25,000 to help fund upgrades in water rescue equipment, protective gear, receive advanced training, and other necessary steps to prepare to protect our community to the best of their ability. I commend the Davie Rescue Squad for the life saving work that they do in our community and I look forward to the improvements that this Duke Energy grant will allow.

This week I'm proud to recognize Cayleigh Shaw of Mocksville, who has received an internship with the N.C. State Extension Summer Program.
Students across the country applied for this position, and Cayleigh’s passion for the agricultural industry, impressive grades, and dedicated work ethic distinguished her as an outstanding fit for the role.
Cayleigh is a rising sophomore at N.C. State studying Livestock and Poultry Management. Her enthusiasm for the agricultural industry has even inspired fellow community members to step into agricultural education and careers. I wish Cayleigh the best this summer and hope she enjoys her experience while gaining valuable experience. I continue to be impressed by and proud of the hard-working students from District 30.

My continued condolences are with the families impacted by the fire on Main Street in Lexington last week. The Lexington community is now stepping into the process of recovering and rebuilding Main Street, and I will support the affected businesses, families, and our community to the best of my ability. Our community grieves the loss of the businesses that had become staples of our city. We mourn the memories and community made in the effected establishments. We mourn with the families that now must figure out their next steps.
They are not moving forwards alone, though, and I know our community will recover and return as strong as ever. To read the touching tribute and article published by the Davidson Local this week, click the button below:
As we close out the month of May, I want to acknowledge May as Foster Care Month. Over 11,000 children and young adults are currently in the North Carolina foster care system.
The foster care system is intended to provide temporary, safe, and stable homes to children and young adults. I grew up in a family that frequently invited foster youth into our home with open arms. I have always had a heart for the foster care system, and some of the legislation I am proudest of working on as an elected official has been created to improve this system and protect our state's youth.
With May coming to a close, I want to acknowledge that this issue continues past this one month. I encourage our community to learn about how we can better support foster youth and families year-round. As an elected official, I will continue to work on solutions to protect the youth of our state and continue strengthening and supporting families.
